Since 1999 the Emu Park Lions Club Festival of the Wind has grown as a major attraction for families and kite enthusiasts from around the region. This event is a fun family day for enjoyment by families and their children. While kite flying and wind powered recreation are the focus for the festival, many other attractions such as the picnic markets, beach competitions for kids, carnival rides and the free entertainment and closing fireworks go together to make this a great day for the whole family.
Yeppoon High School BandMany thanks to the band for their effort to help make the day one of the best we can remember. These youngsters just seem to get better every time we see them perform.
Syd circulated throughout the day with his entertaining antics and giveaways for the children. I have not yet heard if Syd will be making a return appearance or not.

About our Festival .Emu Park’s Festival of the Wind will be held on Sunday 18th May 2008. Festival of the Wind is a free community fun day held on Fisherman’s Beach and in Bell Park which is made possible by the generous sponsorships of local businesses and individuals. The Festival of the Wind combines kite flying, a giant picnic market, free entertainment, beach competitions and a great fireworks display to make up one of the biggest events on the Emu Park calendar. A big attraction will be the giant kites flown by Kite Magic from Sydney and the spectacular kite displays by the Queensland Kite Flyers’ Association. Visitors will be amazed at giant Trilobite and Octopus kites. Inexpensive Kit Kites will be available to provide families with the opportunity to construct and decorate kites and join in the fun. A wide range of sports kites will also be on sale for the more serious kite flyer. Visitors will enjoy watching Rokkaku fighting kite competition that runs through the afternoon. Individuals and local businesses sponsor the Rokkaku kites with each kite displaying the sponsors’ name and logo. The kite flyers will try to cut the strings of opposition kites making them fall to the beach. Winners from a series of heats play off in a grand final for the much sought after annual trophy. Sponsors are encouraged to fly their own kite but we can also make arrangements for someone to fly their kite for them. The sand sculpture competition is open to groups and individuals of all ages. Youngster and not so young will also enjoy the Frisbee and Paper Plane flying competitions. An extensive free entertainment programme is planned for the afternoon. Children’s carnival rides are available all day. These include the exciting Sizzler adventure ride, children’s merry-go-round, slides and jumping castles. A charge applies for these rides. Food and drink stalls will be open all day. Emu Park Lion’s focus in running Festival of the Wind is to promote community spirit through the involvement of volunteers while providing families with an opportunity to have fun together on the beach. The entertainment program encourages our youth to develop their artistic talents by providing them with the opportunity to take the stage and entertain the community as part of their school band, dance group or choir.
